Although more recent constructions transformed hiding alpujarreña popular architecture, we can still find pristine white facades, pure volumes and terraos launa, along with a preferred orientation south looking precious and incomparable light. Urbanism shows an intricate design with steep streets, nostalgic memories of the old Hispano settlement.

The early church was the ancient Islamic mosque adapted to the new cult, but was destroyed in the earthquake of 1522, while the Moorish destruction suffered rebuilt in 1568. But the new temple, despite the heavy obligations at the expense of tithes by the territorial lords, was delayed almost to the seventeenth, reduced to a single ship of only 19 X 6.6 meters, sacristy and belfry with steeple. The economic recovery of the eighteenth century and population growth require increased capacity with a platform at the foot and extension of the head, while altarpieces and images are brought Bocanegra at the expense of the bishop, benefactor and native of the town. The present church building history shows that, with masonry walls in the ship, while the stonework facade is something exceptional in the Alpujarra religious architecture, with particular emphasis on the cover, with arch and advanced to the plane of the facade to get a greater sense of monumentality, preceded by a flight of steps. Particular note is the cover, a simple reinforcement limabordón (four sides), standing at the high altar or straight cloth decorated with stars and spreaders that have traces of polychrome. At the altar the figure of St. Augustine, patron of the town, devotion, possibly in relation to the nearby convent of the Augustinians of Huécija.
City of Santa Cruz de Marchena
(XIX century). He presides over the square next to the church and the huge pig bananas, always well fed with water from the ditch that runs underneath the Place. The simple building of the new City Hall was designed by architect Enrique López Rull Almeria in 1899, as contained in a plaque on the door. This adds value to the many designer Almeria in the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, such as the Plaza de Toros, the Society of Mary School, Casa de la Peña, the Teatro Cervantes or the Paseo de la Caridad, buildings also many workers and bourgeois homes linked to urban expansion of the city at that time. Just to raise the new building of local power design uses a classicist and historicist bourgeois symmetrical two-storey house of representative character, with imitating ashlar brick reinforcement at corners, holes organization, framed and crowned with segmented arches, and closure of the façade with a parapet above the cornice as a classical pediment. The new municipal building should stand out in the urban fabric.

Reminds us of the heavy load of popular religiosity of the valley of Andarax from the martyrs of the War of the Alpujarras and the Catholic Counter-Reformation Council of Trent encouraging us to intercede for the souls in purgatory. (XVIII century). Baroque mansions, features the Old Regime, are linked to the economic recovery of the eighteenth century. The front shows the most popular character of the Baroque, displayed a lack of ornamentation, cleanly cutting holes the wall, the dedifferentiation of plants, the importance of wrought iron railings as a symbol of prestige, and the cover and stately detail and classicist. These rural Baroque features are present in the house of Juan María López López Calle Fuente, where a high outer wall and wrought iron railings rotunda closing the windows are the only elements that indicate the importance of housing. But above all, stands inside access through a hallway with slate slabs to simple arcaded courtyard with wooden feet and shoes holding the first floor gallery devoted to storage and pantry. Surely this was the open court principle, as usual in the High Alpujarra, but during the nineteenth century, with the development of bourgeois comfort, closed, although a popular timber frame and wattle. The staircase is located in the corner.
